Westside MMA Options
Westside MMA has two distinctly different paths available for those who want to learn how truly combine different martial arts into a mixed martial arts curriculum. We firmly believe that Dutch Kickboxing, Filipino Boxing, Muay Boran, and Muay Thai are foundational to developing a quality MMA fighter, so our fighters train in our first two levels of Muay Thai before moving into one of the two MMA paths we have available.
The Methodology
Both of our MMA paths start with absolute striking chaos via a lesson by lesson approach with our Muay Thai Series Levels 1 and 2. Once they pass the performance tests at each level, they are able to choose the next path. If they go to MMA Jiu-Jitsu Level 1, they will have 36 lessons that start with more advanced stand up striking techniques and end with stand up Jiu-Jitsu submissions. It is so intense that they will be allowed to test for their shorts at the end of the unit.
In our program, we stick to the Thai tradition of having to earn your Muay Thai shorts. In our program, those shorts mean a great deal and they are never just given out.
If they go to MMA Silat Level 1, they will have 36 lessons mirror the stand up striking concepts in MMA Jiu-Jitsu Level 1 with the change of stand up Silat submissions at the end.
As the MMA Jiu-Jitsu and MMA Silat programs branch out, they share similar striking setups, but vary greatly in the takedown and submissions used. Overall, Silat is a much more violent martial art that seeks to be so violent that a submission is a welcome relief to the pain train.
What are the training times?
In this option, students on the MMA Jiu-Jitsu path would train Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Gracie Barra Twin Cities with black and brown belt Jiu-Jitsu instructors. Students on the MMA Silat path would train Tuesday and Thursday at Band of Brothers Martial Arts with certified instructors. Through this combination, students would have the option to do amateur MMA fights or amateur Muay Thai/Kickboxing fights.
What does a class look like?
Here is some combo work by Abe, who was in our Muay Thai Level 2 program at the time of the video.

What’s in each level?
We are proud to have created our own curriculum that establishes a system of building lesson upon lesson to give our atheletes the greatest chance to learn and succeed.
Muay Thai Series - Level 1
Level 1 of the Muay Thai series sets up our foundation. Through 18 lessons, students will learn foundational concepts and combinations from Dutch Kickboxing, Filipino Boxing, and Muay Thai.
Learn to fight like this:
Muay Thai Series - Level 2
Muay Thai Series Level 2 brings more complex concepts with Dutch Kickboxing, Filipino Boxing, and Muay Thai. We do much more Filipino Boxing offensive defense and we institute sparring in this level. We work on defensive rounds, as well.
Drills include the Ajarn Chai punch count (Scott’s Muay Thai teacher from Thailand and found of the World Thai Boxing Association) and the Ramon Dekkers 15 count.

MMA Jiu-Jitsu Series - Level 1
This class is the capstone bridge between our Dutch Kickboxing, Filipino Boxing, and Muay Thai into stand up submissions from Jiu-Jitsu. Sparring is included and at the end there is a test with Guro Scott Petri to be able to earn your Westside MMA Warrior Path Muay Thai shorts. These shorts are earned, NEVER given.
This class is hosted at Gracie-Barra Twin Cities.
MMA Jiu-Jitsu Series - Level 2
This series seeks to blend Muay Boran (super violent version of Muay Thai) with entries, takedowns, and submissions from American Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Filipino Jiu-Jitsu.
Each lesson is set up regarding intensity in 6 lesson blocks. We start out slow to learn. Each lesson gets progressively more intense in the 6 lesson block until the last two lessons that are essentially going as close to live as possible. We focus on only two takedowns and three submissions for this 18 lesson unit. As Bruce Lee said, “I fear the man who has done 1 kick 1,000 times more than the man who has done 1,000 kicks 1 time.”
This class is hosted at Gracie Barra Twin Cities and is co-taught by Black and Brown belt Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.
MMA Jiu-Jitsu Series - Level 3
This series seeks to blend Muay Boran (super violent version of Muay Thai) with entries, takedowns, and submissions from American Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Filipino Jiu-Jitsu.

MMA Silat Series - Level 1
This class is the capstone bridge between our Dutch Kickboxing, Filipino Boxing, and Muay Thai into stand up submissions from Dutch and Southeast Asian Silat. Sparring is included and at the end there is a test with Guro Scott Petri to be able to earn your Westside MMA Warrior Path Muay Thai shorts. These shorts are earned, NEVER given.
This class is hosted at Band of Brothers Martial Arts.
MMA Silat Series - Level 2
If you like short bursts of violence with your friends, then this is your path. We use Muay Boran concepts as a violent chaos opener to then go for takedowns and submissions as taught by Malaphilindo Silat expert Scott Petri.
As per the Jiu-Jitsu path mentioned above, we only cover two takedowns and three submissions in this 18 lesson unit.
MMA Silat Series - Level 3
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast and this is the violent end to a great Silat series. We cover an additional striking chaos combo with two more takedowns and three more submissions. Repetition is the key here.
